try checking the portable drive with another (newer PC with good USB 3.0 port). Some PCs or laptop's USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports may not supply enough power to power those USB portable drives. In my experience, I have encountered a motherboard's USB port sometimes does not properly power up a USB portable drive (will cause errors like it was disconnected/reconnected). May na-encounter ako na ganitong motherboard which is already a 3 years old motherboard (I'm pretty sure when it was brand-new, it didn't have this problem, nung tumanda na yung motherboard tsaka naging ganun -- possibly a motherboard voltage regulator issue, kasi wala naman akong nakitang visble bloated capacitors). Although I've experienced this problem on another system which is just about to be 2-years old pa lang, naging ganun na rin yung USB port niya (some portable drives can be used without issues, but others will not properly power up).
