  • Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 Performance @ Tech Spot <click here for link>

From a performance standpoint Windows 8 appears to offer a solid foundation from the get-go. Although there are only a few select areas where it is faster than Windows 7, we are pleased that it\'s able to match it everywhere else.

Looking beyond benchmarks, Windows 8 appears more polished than Windows 7, even if you plan to live on the desktop and aren\'t too fond of the Start screen, general usage is smoother and appears to be faster on Windows 8, which I found most noticeable on our somewhat underpowered Athlon II X4 system. If anything, it\'s a great start, now the Metro/Modern style will have to prove itself as a cross-platform OS that marries desktop, laptop and tablet PCs.

Windows 8 Versus Windows 7: Game Performance, Benchmarked @ Tom\'s Hardware <click here for link>

Of the 10 games we benchmarked, one one demonstrated a significant difference in moving from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and only on Nvidia\'s GeForce GTX 660. That game was Borderlands 2, where our average measured frame rate dropped from 86.6 to 81 FPS. But at that speed, the five-frame drop is hardly worth fretting over.

More bothersome was the compatibility issue we ran into in Sleeping Dogs, which affected Windows 8, but not Windows 7. When we chose the High detail preset, most of the in-game models simply disappeared. Fortunately, that geometry shows up again if you dial down the graphics quality. Hardly a favorable solution, but it\'s what we have for now.

Aside from those couple of idiosyncrasies, performance under Windows 8 is indistinguishable from Windows 7. Any speed-up or slow-down would be almost impossible to identify during game play, and we expect compatibility issues to get patched quickly by game developers.

    Windows 8: Performance Benchmarks @ Bit-Tech <click here for link>

All in all our benchmarks suggest that performance does take a hit when upgrading to Windows 8. The multi-tasking performance degradation is a particular blow to Windows 8, but one which the faster boot times do soften somewhat. That AMD was able to maintain or improve performance with its Windows 8 drivers is promising however, so let\'s hope Nvidia is able to do the same with future driver updates.

Personally, we\'re happy to admit that some of the new features are great, especially File History, the new Task Manager, and the improved multi-monitor support and boot times. However, we\'re still choosing not to upgrade, as these benefits don\'t outweigh the performance drawbacks and the frustration caused by the new UI. It doesn\'t scale well to large monitors, often proves frustrating to use with a mouse and keyboard and things that were once simple to access like shutdown options and the Computer overview are now hidden away in unintuitive places.

Ultimately, whether or not you choose to upgrade will depend on if the new features are worthwhile for your needs. Windows 8 may not be the disaster that Vista or ME were, but it\'s also only a relatively minor upgrade to Windows 7, which has solid performance and stable user base. With many people still continuing to use Windows XP, now 11 years old, and with Microsoft having quietly extended support of Windows 7 to 2020, it\'s easy to see a future where Windows 7 remains the main OS of choice, especially for users of non-touchscreen devices.
  • Same question, hindi pala mag-tatanong yung upgrade assistant kung saan ilalagay yung installation files, ngek :) mukang one time install lang ito a.

may option na gumawa ng back up sa USB or sa DVD,
  • tama meron.. btw ibackup nyo yan sayang din iba kasi hash nyan kaya wag nyo din ishare XD
  • may pirata na din ang otso lol :)
  • Marami ba pagbabago from consumer preview?

Ex. BPI credit card..

And wala bang additional charges, bsta $14.99 lang babayaran?
  • @sishan

  • @booshine,

  • You need to be very careful when you want to upgrade from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 8. Microsoft, for whatever reason, decided to make things complicated. If you run the Upgrade Advisor to buy a copy of Windows 8 online, you will always get the version of Windows 8 that is corresponding to the currently installed version of the operating system. So, if you are running the Upgrade Assistant on a 32-bit version you will end up with a 32-bit Windows 8 version, while running it on a 64-bit version of Windows will result in a 64-bit version of Windows 8.

  • Mura nga.. Maraming ma-enganyong mag-upgrade nyan. Mahanap na nga yung Vista ko, hehe.. ;)
