Unified Laptop/Notebook/Netbook Users Thread Part 2 (NO Trading Allowed)

  • @gen0

Look for laptops with an Intel processor having 4-cores / 8-threads or better. Also avoid the low power model processors that end in "U" unless you prioritize battery life above everything else.

So the processors you should be looking for are Intel Core i7 or Intel Core i5 that end in "H" or "HQ" as these are 45W TDP processors and can boost to higher speeds.

Here's a quick checklist on what to look for in 2nd hand laptops:

    - Intel Core i7-8750H (6-cores / 12-threads with 10.5MB cache and up to 4.1GHz)
    - Intel Core i5-8400H (4-cores / 8-threads with 9MB cache and up to 4.2GHz)
    - Intel Core i5-8300H (4-cores / 8-threads with 9MB cache and up to 4.0GHz)
    - Intel Core i7-7820HQ (4-cores / 8-threads with 9MB cache and up to 3.9GHz)
    - Intel Core i7-7700HQ (4-cores / 8-threads with 7MB cache and up to 3.8GHz)

    Other things to consider:

    - The screen should be 1920x1080 (Full HD) IPS panel
    - The laptop should be able to accomodate a 16GB memory upgrade (ideally 2x8GB)
    - The laptop should have extra M.2 slots for more SSD capacity (ideally NVMe)
    - Good cooling, solid build quality, nice keyboard feel are also things to look for

If you will only be using the laptop at home or at the office and you rarely travel around with it... there is a budget Lenovo laptop with decent specs for Php 37K. Another option is the Acer Nitro semi-gaming laptop for Php 33K however it badly needs a memory and SSD upgrade.

    - Lenovo Ideapad L340 (SKU: L340-15IRH 81LK00R3PH) >> Memory must be upgraded to at least 8GB or 16GB
    - Acer Nitro 5 (SKU: AN515-52 56VN) >> Memory must be upgraded to at least 8GB or 16GB + add an SSD
  • Bro sleepygeepy/all, any recommendation for the below requirements:

    - light weight (must)
    - 13 or 14" touchscreen fhd display (willing to sacrifice touchscreen if not possible)
    - 4 yrs college work like word processing, minor photo edit, etc
    - 30 to 35k budget

    Thanks!

  • @ sleepy - Thank you!
  • Lumabas na sana Ryzen 4th Gen
  • i ended up getting a new but cheap ideapad 330, i3 8th/4gb/1tb hdd. i bought a new 128gb ssd and 8gb ddr4 to speed it up.

wala siya ODD but may provision for ssd/hdd caddy, kaso wala adaptor for the sata to the board, the board's connected looks similar to sata but has fewer pins. alam niyo ba tawag sa adaptor? i tried searching for caddies (?) but buo pati bracket na, and not fit for the 330.

here is a similar board, but mine has no ODD

Not willing to spend more than 2.5k for the bag. Water resistant backpack preferred ko since I ride a motorcycle most of the time. Or any suggestions like OEM bags (Dell, HP)

Quality and aftersales wala ako idea.
  • okay ma yung huawei D15? thanks

check out reviews ng first hand users sa yt. The last time they released a slim laptop (yung competitor ng macbook air) yun sana buy ni gf but she ended up with the air dahil sa bad reviews nung huawei unit.

    ^M.2 slot yata yan sir.

Separate siya na circuit board so makikita mo may ribbon cable na nagko-connect nung separate board to the motherboard.
  • Hi all. Freshman college student here. I'm looking to replace my Dell Inspiron 14 7447 since masyadong mabigat at makapal para dalhin sa school nang madalas. Budget is more or less 20k. Okay lang sakin kung secondhand. What I'm looking for is an ultrabook with a 1080p display, decent specs, decent build, decent keyboard, at tsaka SSD na rin (256 GB min). May nahanap akong secondhand na X1 Carbon (4th gen) na checks all my boxes (6th gen i5 w/ 8 GB of RAM) for 20k. What do you guys think?
  • May nakapag-install na ba dito ng m.2 SATA3 2280 sa ACer Aspire 3 A315-41-R287?
  • Help 40k budget lappy. Thank you :)
  • ^Asus tuf gaming na naka ryzen 5 at gtx 1650. Nasa P42k ata yun. Add ka na lang ng kaunti.
  • 30k budget laptop for productivity. Work from home and portable. Must be at least 8gb and usb type C for charging. Gaming for RTS games also such as Age of Empires 2.

    Please suggest. TIA
  • out of curiosity. meron bang nagamit sa inyo ng linux-based laptop? or did a dual-boot?

I've been using Manjaro for a while now and di na ko nagdual boot pa with Windows. Most of the steam games I play are compatible naman na and I've even managed (somehow) to install Office 365 on it although WPS works fine as an alternative. If may need man ako itest sa windows (mga apps na di pwede sa wine), I just fire up a VM but super madalang na lang. I would have sticked to Windows but fortunately, all features works naman on my laptop including optimus and RGB support for the keyboard (via script) which madali lang naman gawan ng pang execute or pang trigger. The rolling updates is what made me stay for good, very stable and non intrusive. Lastly managed to have full system encryption so very satisfied na. Although ang pinakachallenging lang (I'm using an MSI laptop) is that, during the initial installation, in order to boot from the USB, I had to insert-pull-insert the USB para tumuloy sa installation. On my previous laptop naman walang problemang ganyan, probably an MSI thing.
  • any suggestions for a 30k budget more on movies and gaming hindi naman mga high end na games na sobrang kakain ng graphics kahit mga likes lang ng dota2 or LOL thanks can stretch the budget if need

i had the ideapad upgraded from 1tb hdd to 128gb ssd, d: ngayon yung 1tb, also added 8gb ddr4 on its lone ddr4 slot. feels way faster (as expected), but our older thinkpad t460 is faster.
  • Penge po ng advice, I'm planning to buy a 13" thin and light laptop. Ang need ko lang naman is at least 8gb RAM, i5 8th/3500U, and SSD. Thenito yung isa sa pinaka mura kong nakita <click here for link> pero ang downside lang niya is 1x1ac wifi. Yung mga iba kong nakita is at least 5k more than this one, so worth it bang mag spend ng 5k more for a 2x2 wifi? Ano ba implication pag nag go ako for 1x1 wifi?

And kung may iba pala kayong masusuggest, please do so. thanks

Basically if 1x1, it will limit the speed of that AC WiFi to half of it, from 867Mbps max to 433Mbps *For Data Transfers* which is if normal browsing, downloading or streaming lang din naman ang usage mo, di yan masasaturate ng speed ng internet mo dito sa pilipinas. Its still faster than a typical B/G/N WiFi card that hovers around 150-300Mbps.
Again don't bother so much on it. Lets say naka 150Mbps na internet ka sa bahay, provided malakas signal mo then you're good to go.

If you ask me if gusto mo talaga mag 2x2 for no reason (wala naman talaga masyado benefit), looking at this laptop model's upgradability on youtube I'd say pretty much you can upgrade the SSD and the wifi card yourself with a philips screw and a guitar pick. If you ever go that route, you can purchase a 7265NGW for around 400 pesos or go straight to a WiFi 6 card, the AX200NGW (sila yung compatible sa model mo, this is what I'm personally using) going around 700+ pesos sa sh***e or l***da (although halted operation nila). Or you can have an expert sa mga malls to have it opened for you for a small fee (sa SM samin opening the back lid of a laptop and installing a WiFi card goes around 300-500 pesos), wala namang warranty stickers sa mga screws so you're good.

I think it also depends kung ang home WiFi network mo has dual band 2x2 capability. Kung ganun better to save your money and go with the 1x1 WiFi-ac option. Besides kung kailangan mo ng stable and faster connection may option ka na i-rekta ang laptop to the WiFi router using a LAN cable. Yung extra 5K can be spent on a better upgrade like SSD or more RAM.

One reason din to go for the 2x2 WiFi-ac option is kung ginagamit mo ang laptop sa office and yung office WiFi network niyo is very good and kaya deliver ang full bandwidth (867 Mbps). So may advantage ka over other officemates na gumagamit ng laptops na mas mabagal ang WiFi capability. Pero kung ikakabit mo lang din ang LAN cable sa laptop during office use then yung benefit is mostly moot.

Personally I think worth it narin ang 2x2 WiFi-ac option even if 5K more expensive. Kasi you get two antennas (instead of 1) for better signal coverage and pwede mo gamitin ang 5GHz band which is less prone to interference and hindi siya as congested. Dito sa bahay, meron lang mag microwave ng pagkain sa kusina is enough to disrupt yung 2.4GHz signal namin at nag rereklamo lahat ng kids at teens na nanonood ng Youtube hehe! Pero napansin ko yung 5GHz signal is pretty stable and hindi masyado affected, kasi lahat din ng ibang users sa bahay nasa 2.4GHz frequency :-)

Tingin ko yung sinasabi mo na 5K more expensive does not mean yung WiFi card lang ang difference. Most likely newer model laptop siya with newer chipset and some other new features kaya mas mahal, so check the specs and compare carefully.

  • Mga paps, magtatanong na rin po dito. Nagiisip na ako maglaptop rather than build a new desktop for portability.

Gagamitin po for watching youtube/movies and gaming (mostly fighting games like Tekken 7). Ano po ba marecommend niyo at least below P50k or even less than that mas maganda.

Napupusuan ko sana tong DELL G3 3590 15.6IN I5-9300H GTX1650 8GB 512GB pero baka mas me alam kayong better value.

Although nakakatempt din yung ASUS TUF (FX505GM-AL287T) 15.6IN I5-8300H 8GB 1TB GTX1060 kaso halos P60k na ang price.

    Thanks in advance.
  • ^Wait a little more. Ryzen 7 nm laptops and gtx super variants will be out very soon.
