Kalayaan Island (Spratly) / West Philippine Sea - AFP***

  • ^Nice Juan Nationalist meme. Admin ka ba don? hahaha
Sadly Natuna Islands were occupied by the Indonesian military around 2014-2015, while the Philippine government were afraid taking the point of military command in the Pag-asa island, since 2011. It is the time when the Philippines have enough time and chances to limit China's grasp on our own Exclusive Economic Zone.

Oh, guess what? It's Aquino administration back then. Then suddenly, by 2014, US navy patrolling in the disputed waters were forced to regroup and retreat due to escalating tensions with Chinese military that already occupied tge region. Anong napala natin? Wala, they left us hanging there with promises of backing us up if tensions arise. Tapos sabay sisi sa pumalit sa pwesto. Wow.

ONE reason China’s spectacular rise sometimes alarms its neighbours is that it is not a status quo power. From its inland, western borders to its eastern and southern seaboard, it claims territory it does not control.

In the west, China’s border dispute with India is more than a minor cartographic tiff. China claims an area of India that is three times the size of Switzerland, the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Further west, China occupies Indian claimed territory next to Ladakh in Kashmir, an area called the Aksai Chin. China humiliated India in a brief, bloody war over the dispute in 1962. Since 1988, the two countries have put the dispute on the backburner and got on with developing commercial ties, despite occasional flare-ups.

More immediately dangerous is the stand-off between China and Japan over disputed islands in the East China Sea, known as the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyu in Chinese.

Japan says they have always been its territory and admits no dispute, claiming also that China only started expressing an interest when it began to seem the area might be rich in oil and gas.

A new and much more dangerous phase of the dispute began in 2012 after Japan’s government nationalised three of the islands by buying them from their private owner.

China accused Japan of breaking an understanding not to change the islands’ status. Ever since, it has been challenging not just Japan’s claim to sovereignty over the islands, but its claim to control them, sending Chinese ships and planes to patrol them.

Raising the stakes is Japan’s alliance with America, which says that though it takes no position on who owns the islands, they are covered by its defence treaty with Japan, since it administers them.

Especially provocative to America and Japan was China’s unilateral announcement in November 2013 of an Air-defence Identification Zone, covering the islands.

The worry is less that big powers will deliberately go to war over these desolate little rocks, but that an accidental collision at sea or in the air might escalate unforeseeably.

Similar fears cloud disputes in the South China Sea, where the maritime claims in South-East Asia are even more complex, and, again, competition is made more intense by speculation about vast potential wealth in hydrocarbon resources.

Vietnam was incensed in May 2014 when China moved a massive oil-rig to drill for two months in what it claimed as its waters.

This was near the Paracel Islands, controlled by China since it evicted the former South Vietnamese from them in 1974.

To the south, China and Vietnam also claim the Spratly archipelago, as does Taiwan, whose claim in the sea mirrors China’s. But the Philippines also has a substantial claim. Malaysia and even tiny Brunei also have an interest.

But it is with Vietnam and the Philippines that China’s disputes are most active. The Philippines accuses China of salami-slicing tactics, stealthily expanding its presence in disputed waters. In 1995 it evicted the Philippines from Mischief Reef, and in 2012 from Scarborough Shoal.

This year it has tried to stop the Philippines from resupplying a small garrison it maintains on the Second Thomas Shoal, and appears to be building an airstrip on the Johnson South Reef.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea—UNCLOS—is one forum for tackling these disputes. But UNCLOS cannot rule over territorial disputes, just over the waters habitable islands are entitled to.

And China and Taiwan point to a map published in the 1940s, showing a big U-shaped nine-dashed line around the edge of the sea. That, they say, is historically all China’s. This has no basis in international law, and the Philippines, to China’s fury, is challenging it at an UNCLOS tribunal.

In fact China often fails to clarify whether its claims are based on the nine-dashed line, or on claims to islands, rocks and shoals.

That lack of clarity alarms not just its neighbours and rival claimants, but the United States, which says it has its own national interest in the freedom of navigation in a sea through which a huge chunk of global trade passes

Also alarming is that if these arguments over tiny specks in the sea become so unmanageable, what hope is there for resolving the really big issues? And the biggest of all is the status of Taiwan, still seen by China as part of its territory, but in practice independent since 1949.

For now, Taiwan and China have a thriving commercial relationship. But polls suggest that few in Taiwan hanker after unification with the mainland. And China’s rulers still insist that one day they will have to accept just that.

  • @SnakeEyes

    under aquino govt.

LOL!
  • WARMONGER? ikaw yun. ikaw may gusto makipag away sa china.

really? back read ka kung may makita kang statement ko na we go to war with China? define WARMONGER iho?

technicaly/historicaly YES, but he didn't stand FIRM sa ating Rights, naging sunod-sunuran pa sya sa China
  • so HOPELESS ka na?

Hopeless for now. But hey, tides could change. Mas ok if we plan for the bigger move in the future to reclaim those islands back.

Don't get me wrong. Atin yung islands na yun. I hate PRC for bullying us. I want them to go down para makuha natin yun. Pero sa nakikita ko lang, yung pag protest natin against them, yung pakikipaglaban natin sa kanila currently, would just make us weaker kesa sa magiging effect sa kanila. Kaya sa ngayon, we keep mum on the issue. But doesn't mean we give up.

Kung si PRRD ay talagang binenta yan, or hinayaan nyang ma occupy pa ang ibang island na under our protection, katulad ng naganap sa mga last administration, maiinis ako sa kanya at isa ako sa tutuligsa sa kanya. But that is not the case today. So far last time I checked, under our command pa din naman yung ibang island. Kaya chill pa.
  • really? back read ka kung may makita kang statement ko na we go to war with China? define WARMONGER iho?

  • Duterte 'has accepted' need for US assistance in Marawi: Abella

President Rodrigo Duterte "has accepted" that government troops need the assistance of Manila's treaty ally Washington in flushing out terrorists in southern portions of the country, a Palace spokesman said on Tuesday.

"He (Duterte) has accepted the situation at this stage," Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella told reporters when asked if the president was "wavering" on his earlier stance that foreign powers should not meddle in internal affairs/

Last November, Duterte said he respects the country's defense treaties with "friends," including traditional "ally" the United States, but still wanted foreign troops to leave his country by the end of his term.

Despite the president's push for an "independent foreign policy," military officials said it has allowed the entry of armed US personnel near war-torn Marawi City to provide "technical support" on surveillance and information gathering against the terrorists.

Abella downplayed the president's criticisms of the US, saying the alliance between Manila and Washington on full display in Marawi City "was always existing like that."

The nearly month-long battle for full control of Marawi City has left 258 terrorists and 65 government troops dead, and scores injured, according to the military.

The Philippines' Islamic City's 200,000 population fled from their homes and many suffer from poor conditions in evacuation areas.

LOL, Nonetheless, this is a good example of why you should not badmouth other countries because of grudges. If there are any issues against friendly countries, do it properly so you won't look like a fool swallowing what you just spit out. where is china now mr. president? you also ask for help from them?

independent foreign policy, hahahaha, yes it is, you are totally independent from china, solve you're problem by you're own, you're loving friend china, china only care's on what he can get from you, business is business, if this still not a wake -up call from you mr. president, you are truly are "LEFT" go to china you're self, we don't need a traitor, we want a president which better than what we had before, not much worst than before, you are destroying our country, you are a clown, you take everything is a some sort of a joke, flip-flop to cover the another flip-flop, you're losing the credibility, our country have all the sign of failure right now.hoping it will not happen.

because of you're pride and egoism, narcisistic attitude, of not accepting the E.U. aid that supposed to help the muslim mindanao, in time's of crisis like marawi, you sacrifice them, and now you're people are suffering with this crisis, for you're pride and egoism, narcisistic attitude, you are failure you're self, all you just need is common sense, you even don't have to be a president. this is self explanatory.

as agot isidro says " kung gusto mo magutom, ikaw na lang" think of you're people not of you're self, sacrifice you're ego and pride for them, for the greater good, president with the brain, idea and move of a mayor.

  • Chinese loans may put Bangladesh in debt trap

NEW DELHI: Lanka's estimated national debt is $64.9 billion, of which $8 billion is owed to China.

China is arm-twisting Bangladesh to convert soft loans it offered -during President Xi Jinping's visit to Dhaka last year -to commercial credit (incurring higher interest rates) with apparently no headway into projects for which the amount was earmarked.

Bangladesh, however, has resisted the move to change pattern of loans for the projects which are part of grandiose OBOR project connecting China with rest of Asia, Africa and Europe. Higher interest on Chinese loans could push Bangladesh into a debt trap like Sri Lanka.

where is china that our president keep on bragging in front of media before, in time of crisis like this, where is the ally of china, if there is, that can help us now. what is the reason why our president did not go to pag-asa? for his friend china, reason not talk about the arbitration ruling? for his friend china, reason for releasing all the chinese poachers? for his friend china, who is occupying our EEZ? his friend china.

  • Australia gives $920,000 in aid to help Marawi

MANILA - The Australian government is giving $920,000 (P34.5 million) worth of food and other supplies to thousands of residents who were displaced by Islamist militants holed up in Marawi City.

In a statement, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the aid includes the provision of tarpaulins, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, water and sanitation kits, 500 tons of pre-positioned rice, hygiene items, torches and whistles for protection, sanitary supplies, clothes, and clean birthing kits.

The assistance is in addition to the $40 million that Australia pledged last March in support of the Philippines' peace process, Bishop said.

The official also affirmed her government's support for the Philippines' campaign against terrorism and ending the insurgency wracking Mindanao.

"The Government is committed to supporting the peace process and development in Mindanao, which are critical for a strong and stable Philippines," Bishop said.

"The Australian Government continues to work with the Philippine Government to combat terrorism in our region."
