Your opinion will be much appreciated! (Career Shifter)

  • hi mga sir/mam.

need ko lang po ng onting time nyo :D I hope may makaka sagot or bigay ng opinion sa queries ko :D
Im not a graduate of I.T or any related course sa computer. BUT PASSION KO PO IS COMPUTER. Im a nursing graduate way back 2010. With 3 years on experience sa hospital. kaso ayun nga, not happy anymore with my work.

Kaya right now, I\'m planning to take up Cisco 1-4 (Network and System) My friend told me na most of the company prefer a graduate of I.T course or any related course pag nag apply ka sa ganyang position. is it true?

kaya as of today I\'m torn taking up, between application development or network and system. but technically i prefer hardware than software etc.

Here\'s the funny part, during my college days I\'m building my own RIG, it come to a point na nag Water Cooling System pa ko.

I have no experience pa kasi sa pag apply sa mga I.T company eh, kaya di ko alam. Ung friend ko lang nag sabi sakin.

Thank you sa mga mag rereply. Thanks in advance sobra :D
  • While it is true na you\'ll excel in a field kung saan happy ka sa ginagawa mo, career shift maybe beneficial pero pwede din maging quicksand.

First, to address your dilemma, how passionate are you when it comes to computer? I like computers also, enjoyed setting up rigs, and yeah, been there sa OC and water-cooling also. But it\'s just like a hobby to me, similar sa PC games, photography, and such. Though ang difference siguro sa atin is I enjoy my work. I\'m an engineering graduate and a department manager by profession. And I know lots of people na passionate din sa computer, some of them members dito ofcourse.

And regarding sa IT industry, software is where the money\'s at - development. Though may market din sa hardware, but it\'s not just like assembling a rig or any of its sort. Hardware is more on design - new capable mobo, more efficient cooling, etc. that is marketable - which means for mass production. For this conversation, let\'s say na 1st part would be hardware industry.

You need an idea to excel, and not just any lame ass idea. Development is all about ideas and creativity. And this is the 2nd part, which involves software development. To start with, there are several fields: entertainment, service, etc.

3rd part would be networking/ security. This is maintaining a certain system, and safeguarding them.

And by demographics, oversupply ang IT industry. Simply because usually ang tao (to be more particular, sa pinoy) sunod sa uso. Thoughts such as \"uso ang computer kaya magko com-sci ako\" or \"in demand ang nurse sa Canada kaya magne nurse ako\".

For entry-level, madami ka kalaban, which also means capable ang market na ibaba ang budget dahil oversupply nga. For competitive pay, you need experience and skill set na above sa iba.

If you\'re willing to undergo through all of that, and willing to take the risk, go ahead and take the plunge.

1 thing I\'m sure of, if you don\'t love what you are doing: either quit and do what you love the most, OR learn to love it.

One piece of advice though, master and hone your craft, and everything (including success) would follow. Don\'t chase the money nor success, let those things chase you.

    Good luck on your career.

Couldn\'t have said it any better.. sana OP di ikaw yung case ng nag nursing dahil in-demand or pinilit ng magulang dahil in-demand.. hehe. dami kasing ganun.

Anyway, pareho tayo in terms of planning of career shifting. Architect ako and now gusto ko na lang mag artista dahil ang bilis ng pera sa artista. lol. planning on joining PBB. hehe. kidding.

No but seriously, gusto ko rin magpalit ng path, may mga \"sana\" na rin ako ngayon like sana nag seaman ako (passion to travel) or culinary. those professions na di kailangan masaydong magpakatalino at mag-isip tapos aligned with my passion pa.

Ang difference siguro natin is ginusto ko mag architecture. bata pa lang ako, eto na pangarap ko. actually passion ko siya... before... Pero sobrang disappointing and lakas maka-discourage ng third world nating bansa sa propesyon na to. sobrang taken for granted ang architecture satin. it\'s supposed to create and build landmarks (look at Europe) that will beautify and reinforce the coutnry\'s image, pero hindi. dahil satin, architecture is just business and all about wealthy clients. ang isa pa, isa itong archi sa mga propesyon na sa trabaho ay big deal ang maging sikat.

The problem with me though, ang dami kong interest. bakit ako nasa TPC? you guess it right. i also build PCs and mod a bit... kahit softwares gusto kong matutunan genuinely.. siguro dahil sa sobrang ayoko na sa propesyon ko ngayon kaya kung saan saan ako naghahanap ng mapagiintersahan. kahit hardcore sciences like chemistry, physics and microbiology gusto ko ngayon pag-aralan. haha

about applying to a job na nagrerequire ng certain degree, i guess it applies on super technical job, probably this includes I.T.
How we wish we can just demonstrate to the employer that we are competent and not just look for what we\'ve earned in diploma.

however just a bit of encouragement, my sister is now a VP in JPMorgan Chase and she is not in anyway had prior education in finance and banking. her degree is chemistry pero ngayon yan na siya sobrang layo sa degree niya. well she started as an entry level analyst some 8 years ago. with my current dilemma right now of changing career also, i\'m actually seeing her as a model that success is still possible. hehe

  • Kunin mo yang Cisco 1-4. Mag pa certify ka, then apply as part of a NOC team mapa international man yan o local.

Siguro technical support pwede kang makuha diyan. It wont even qualify for onsite IT for some companies.

  • I would suggest you go with Web / Software Development. Ako career shifter din and I can assure you that possible ang Nursing pag mag shift nang career .

Think it over, yung hardware second skill mo na lang yan.
Ng router and wifi namin. It came to a point nga na, pag hindi connected ung data ng isp namin (globe)

Tinandaan ko ung user and password
Na nilagay niya sa ip address. I know na mali pero have no choice kesa ma hassle pa.

Pero i can assure you guys na may alam

Oopppss we prefer an i.t related course :(

So your telling me mga sir na pag nag aral ako ng crash coarse sa programming like the basic language
Of c++ and java, eh malaki amg chance na ma hire ako?

  • I agree kay Sir ezembrano quicksand nga kaya dapat pagisipan mo mabuti...

Pag tinuloy mo na either Hardware or Software I.T. don\'t ever think of turning back na especially sa Nursing since magiging magulo na nga talaga ang career path mo.

I don\'t want to discourage you about CCNA or Network System Administrator pero before you can qualify sa mga positions na yan you need to be certified muna which is kung afford mo kumuha then go ahead.

Ang pinakamadali entry level naman for me is yung Web Design and Development using Wordpress at Joomla but syempre alam mo pa rin dapat ang mga fundamentals like HTML, CSS, JavaScript at samahan mo rin nang mga Web Application Development using Ruby on Rails, PHP (frameworks), Java, C#. Maganda pa dito sa software development is Team environment sya parati kahit saan mo tingnan and tumataas ang demand nila as years pass by.

  • medyo mahirap din sa hardware IT kasi they expect you to know a thing or 2 on electronics theory, and that means an engineering diploma. on larger tech companies or even factories na may mga mission-critical equipment they have a well-stocked electronics repair bench complete with oscilloscope, bench power supplies and signal generators. very few would land on hardware R&D jobs which you can play with some pretty high tech toys at your disposal

on the software side maraming avenues for career growth. you can go to hardcore coding or go on the business side as a business analyst which i\'m in right now
  • ako nursing grad din at registered nurse but after passing the board exam mapupunta pala sa graphic design yung career ko. Ngayon home based na job ko.

  • up

how about a 40 yo chemical engineer na nagsawa na sa career nya dahil na-stereotyped na lamang sa isang field - eager na eager to shift careers into the IT field, yet clueless how/where to start?

    what chance do I have?

    what path should I follow?

Your wisdom would be very much appreciated. thank you all & God bless :)
  • Kung wala kang background sa IT, you have to start from scratch. Kung may alam ka at least isang programming language, mag enrol ka ng post grad or certificate course, then start from there. Ang daming application ng chem engg ha? Pwede ka sa food, materials, packaging, phamaceuticals, liquor, semicon, petroleum, education, research, biomedicine, manufacturing, production, cosmetics, electronics, at sobrang dami pa. Na explore mo na lahat yan?
