Alienware M17x R4 (HD 7970m) Dead GPU or what? Please help!

  • If it's ok pag integrated GPU gamit mo, most probably on the wayout na Yug 7970m mo. Typically failure rate of 7970m dramatically increases after 2 years of usage (can be extended by religiously cleaning your heatsinks and using manual fan control to lower idle temps and max temps) and by not using the integrated GPU (based on my personal experience).

    Do the following:

    1. Clean and reinstall LVDS cable with contact cleaner(nasa ilalim ng keyboard yan)
    2. Clean heatsinks
    3. Clean GPU heatsink and correctly reapply thermal paste. Inspect lso the thermal pads if they are still ok (should not be dry and should not be lasog lasog) and in proper positions.

Check if the said distortions are still seen. If yes, proceed to the next steps

    4. Remove 7970m MXM card
    5. Clean contacts of the MXM card and the socket
    6. Reinsert MXM card (make sure it is properly inserted)
    7. Reinstall evrything in order

Check if the said distortions are still seen. If yes, proceed to the next steps

    8. Try to clean reinstall your OS using alienware recovery disks/partitions

If issue still persists, then your card is on its wayout na.

Mura lang 7970m, nasa 10k to 20k na kang yan. But I suggest you upgrade to GTX 970M (did that to mine, huge improvements lalo na sa temps).

^example po ba ng contact cleaner e WD-40?

^ano po gagawin pag dry or lasog lasog? papalitan na lang or pwede kahit wala nang thermal pads?

    5. Clean contacts of the MXM card and the socket

    8. Try to clean reinstall your OS using alienware recovery disks/partitions

  • ¹. You can use wd40 pero messy yan. May contact cleaner na nabibili (ace hardware)

    3. If lasog lasog but still not dry, just reposition it properly (though its recommended you replace it). Pero pag dry na, you need it to replace na.

    8. For that kind of problem, hindi na ako gagamit ng DDU. Papagurin ko lang sa sarili ko. Your choice, pero mas ok sa akin ang clean installation to clear all things out and to avoid further guess work. Pro Tip: create an image of your system drive bago mag restore.

Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge/Haswell/Skylake for laptops ay halos magkakasame lang ng level of performance, mostly sa iGPU at efficiency lang nagkakatalo. So, yeah, your 3630QM will not be a bottleneck but but I suggest installing atleast 3820QM or better yet 3920XM (almost lahat ng inupgrade ko na m17x r4 to gtx 970m did requested for 3920XM).

M17X R4 and 17R1 ay last lineup from alienware na very end-user upgradeable. So I do believe you can do it on your own. :)

  • 1. Any will do. Don't over apply it.

    3. You do need to replace it na pag dry na dahil severely reduced or wala na yung capability niya to effectively transfer heat (it now acts as an heat insulator).

Factors to consider to tell if it is somewhat compatible sa system mo:
-card type should be MXM 3.0B
-"classification" of cards - mid range GPUs wont properly fit sa heatsink designed for high end cards and vice versa, most of the time, heatsinks for amd and nvidia cards are not directly interchangeable.
-vBIOS version compatibility - very important when upgrading.
