or ganito talaga lahat ng android TV box? good for 2-3yrs lang?

  • ^Planned obsolescence.

Mibox 3 MDZ-16-ABwas released October 2016.. so far that was 3 years 6months already and afaik magkaka Pie update pa siya this year.
The Mibox S MDZ-22-AB was announced around October 2018. Nasa 1 year and 6months na rin siya.
Google Nexus Player naman was released November 2014 but was discontinued by Google around May 2016. Last update was Oreo. So far pinaka longest supported Android TV is the Nvidia shield 2015. It was released around May 2015. Kaka 5 years lang niya this May 2020.
So far yung pinaka oldest android TV OS ko is the Google Nexus player. Though discontinued na it still works okay. Last Oreo update slowed down. I downgraded it to Nougat and it still worked great. Only issue I encountered was wala siyang HW HEVC decoding kaya medyo limited na siya.

Also, have the Minix U1 dati. 1st year was great kasi active sila mag update. But after that when I learned that it's going to be stuck in Lollipop 5.0 and wala nang plans upgrading to Marshmallow I decided to sell it and get a mibox3 instead.
  • I think we're forgetting that planned obsolescence applies to all Android devices like phones, tablets and STBs.
  • @unimodem

  • Xiaomi Mi Box S and other google certified devices (e.g. Nvidia Shield) implemented the Widevine L1 DRM requirement of Netflix on the firmware itself. That means, these devices will allow Hardware Decode of Netflix streams and allows Full HD / 4K playback. Earlier Minix models are not Google Certified, but they implemented a software hack that allows them to embed "Keys" just like Google Certified devices. After, a few years Google was able to trace this and implemented a service wide, MAC Address filter. That means the embedded "Keys" are denied the Widevine L1 DRM needed for decoding the protected content of Netflix and Youtube. Because of this, they will fall back to Software Decoding, these devices lack the CPU muscle to perform the software decode of Netflix streams at high resolutions & bit rates. This means they will default down to 720p with low bit rates or 540p with high bit rates.

All Chinese no-name clones of Android Media Boxes will always use Software Decoding (e.g. MXQ Pro 4K, X96). The S905x Amlogic processor can only handle 720p on software decode of Netflix Streams, while Mi Box S with the same processor will have no problem playing up to 4K since it is going to use the gpu optimized for Hardware Decode. All Android phones except for One Plus 7 and Google Pixel models will always use Software Decoding. Fortunately, these phones have octa-cores or beefy processors that they can handle software decode of Full HD streams.

Xiaomi Mi Box S will FOREVER support playback of 4k Netflix streams, as long as they have video profiles matching HEVC/AVC/VP9. Even if Netflix someday moves to an even more complex codec & higher resolution (6K) video formats, as long as they have the HEVC/AVC/VP9 streams online it can still be played on older Google Certified Devices, but then you'll feel that you're missing out on new things that can only be played on newer hardware. So you'll feel the urge to buy the new hardware, even if your current hardware is working just fine. And that's what you call "Perceived Obsolescence", not "Planned Obsolescence".

Wow, Nice explanation.. baka mapabili pa tuloy ako isa pang Mi Box S lol..

  • @Exposure
Tama sir.
  • "Xiaomi Mi Box S" just launched in India as "Xiaomi Mi Box 4K". This means, support for this device will continue for at least a year (maybe more).
  • @Exposure

  • @jac9
Kay @taobakoinay yung reply ko. Nagtatanong sya ng cheapest.
  • whats a good and reliable paid IPTV service na madali set up sa mibox? thanks!

i suggest search ka sa youtube ng review katulad ni kevin porteous, marami sayang review sa iba ibang cheap iptv services, naka vigilante ako ngayon so far satisfied naman ako malinaw mga channels at mabilis ung support nila via telegram

The only downside I see with the Mi Box S (and Stick) is that you cannot effectively use it as a light/mini PC since the apps offered by the Android TV store are a mere subset of what's available in the Play Store. Its 2GB RAM and 8GB onboard storage is severely limiting too and is compounded by the lack of ports and interfaces. But if streaming is all you want to use it for - it is unbeatable.

Newer Android tv boxes with the Amlogic S905X2/X3 (upcoming X4), 912, 922 SOCs with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal storage are finally delivering on the promise of a capable android mini pc / media player. But boxes that are not officially Google-certified will still have no Widevine L1 and HDCP support. Use alternative methods na lang or your TV's upscaling capabilities to somewhat mitigate the picture quality.

Better yet, just get a Google-certified Android smart TV for your next purchase. No hassle of separate remotes, power bricks, wires and boxes. Matagal pa ang support. And if the support stops, the manufacturer will at least leave you with fully working versions of the apps that support the full native resolution of your TV.

  • Bumili ako ng China tv box H96 Max, RK3399 processor, 4gb ram and 32 internal. Ok na siguro ito for streaming and watching Netflix.
  • H96 gamit ko for more than 3 years na.
  • JetBOX and TeaTV for movie and tv series streaming
RedboxTV and Live NetTV for TV channels

I don't own a Mi box but I think these streaming apps can be side-loaded to it.

This is my china android tv box, currently retired and replaced by PLDT TVolution stick. Best in perfomance among the cheapest (less than 1k) tv boxes.
  • nabuhay yung mi box ko kagabi when my wife cleaned our other room, nakita nya yung order ko noon sa banggood na never ko pa nagamit, a mini keyboard with receiver. i attached the receiver on my mi box and that is all is needed.

sobra natuwa ako sa mini kb. so much better than the default mi box stick.

parang ganito sya, mine is just a plain white tho:
