Wired vs Wireless

  • Good day

    -ano mas reliable sa office wired or wireless?
    -may mga wireless network setup office na ba dito sa pinas? anong line of business nila?

    hehehe..

    salamat sa mga sasagot.
  • 1. speed of your link will depend how many existing wifi hotspot available there and how many connected devices is, the point is the noisier the environment, the worst you get, also the many client connected to the hotspot, the worst speed you will get. tl;dr it's a shared bandwidth

    2. meron but having a wifi to compete with wired connection is much more expensive since this will involve multi-homing and not all wifi chipset support this.

    3. rated speeds, cat5 is rated upto 1gbps while cat6 is rated upto any gigabit speeds (10gbps?). tldr, if you want guaranteed gigabit speeds on your local network go cat6.

    4. wired, no question asked.

    5. in the company that I worked on, we only use Wireless connection on employees who roam a lot in the building, so thats laptop users. pretty much 99% of the computers in the company is wired. We also had a public hotspot for employees to connect to para maka facebook sila or something else since by default they cant access these services on their work computers, not to mention that public hotspot only turns on on break times para walang lusot.

    so in your question meron ba mga company na gumagamit lang ng wifi only network, meron siguro but I can only imagine bad things happening from them when they do that. in short, its impractical to use wifi as your primary link to your local network.
  • Thanks for the answer sir.

    1.)sa unang answer sir, yung drop rate po sana ng copmputer to computer katulad ng transferring and sharing of data ng wired vs wireless, single pc to pc lang po sir, para may ma ilagay lang po ako sa recommendation ko..hehe estimated drop rate.

    5.)yung boss ko kasi kailangan po ng pruweba kahit ibinigay ko na lahat ng pros and cons ng wired vs wireless. kahit top of the line ba ang gamit mo sa wireless ganun padin po ba ang performance pag dating sa network traffic?
  • 1. the degradation speed will depend how much available bandwidth and kayang i handle ng AP, for example a 300mbps wifi router can handle 150mbps download and 150mbps upload, shared yan ah. so if for example there's 10 computers connected and doing a network transfer at the same time their bandwith may be lets say 15mbps per computer the more computers connected the less bandwith you get per device.

    Of course you can do a workaround for this by installing additional AP but this is just a messy way to get it working you will also loose one of the great functionality of AP which is roaming if you do this workaround.

    also if you want to get a gigabit speeds, wired is only the way as of this moment.

    this is why we put all things in wired connection as possible, less headache in the long run.

    2. sabhin mo kay boss na just drop his delussion, the wireless technology is not there yet. But hey maybe Li-Fi can be your way to go for a wireless connection but, that technology is still in work-in progress and if it was available right now, Im not surprised kung gagastos kayo ng half a million peso for that as a first hand users.

  • Hi masters,

    I dont know if this is the right venue for my question. paki delete lng po if hindi.

    regarding po sa p2p connection. meron po akong net cafe which is some trees and houses apart from my house. gusto ko pong batuhan ng signal ung house namin instead of applying for a new line. siguro mga 200 meters lang po ang pagitan and mas mtaas ung location ng net shop..

    any suggestions po kung anong pwede kong gawin?
  • @polka

    -thanks ulit sa pag sagot sir. noted sa mga points mo. tingin ko kasi ang may suggestion ng wireless is contructor na gumagawa ng new office namin, di ko alam kung tinatamad mag kable o para bawas trabaho sa kanila, palibhasa pag nag explain ka sa walang alam sa networking mapapa hanga mo agad at maniniwala agad eh..hehe, kaya kailangan ko mag explain at mag recommend.. hehe

    @snaremastermeg

    -tingin ko sir hindi advisable mag 200m sa cabling, gagana siya pero may mararanasan ka na intermitent chaka dropdown . kailangan mo mag lagay ng repeater/router sa 100m chaka mo idugtong ulit.
  • @informix

    you can also ask for 2nd opinion sa mga IT services out there, let your boss talk to them, I can assure you that most of those IT services will always recommend wired connection as much as possible,.

    as you said medyo matrabaho at start, pero less headache in the long run. and im not sure kung gaano kadaming AP ang ikakabit sa inyo, I can assume that a 10 sets of AP is much more expensive than buying a 2-3 boxes of cat6 cable and rj45 modular plugs.
  • we recently transitioned from a typical office setup to the one below
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/about/cisco-on-cisco/collaboration/connected-workplace-web.html

    although not 100% wireless, wired desktop have been greatly reduced as we are moving towards the BYOD setup, wireless is fine for a typical office worker. take note that wireless is half-duplex so it can never equal wired connections.
  • @informix

    Thanks sa pagreply sir..
    mejo mahirap yata mag cabling s area namin sir ksi across the road saka may houses in between pa..

    I've read about ubiquiti nanostation m2.. meron po ba ditong nakapag try na netong product na to?
  • Very informative. Learned a lot from you, @Polka. Thank you.
  • @polka

    -ok na sir.kombinsido na.. dik2x na dik2x si wireless sa recommendation ko eh..hehe pero salamat sa mga information sir. hindi lang AP ang gagastusin ng kumpanya sir pati wireless adaptor, eh ang dami PC dito mga 20-40 pc.

    -may tanong pa ako sir, ang mga wireless gadget ba sir kasama sa interference sa signal ng wireless? gaano ka lakas ang signal interception nito?

    @frequenzy

    -salamat sa information sir, ilang desktop user kayo sir?? anong line of business nyo sir? at gaano na po katagal yung setup nyo sir?

    @snaremastermeg

    -di ko na narinig yan sir, pero parang signal base din siya..hehe, may interference padin siguro sa signal sir lalo na sa outdoor.
  • 40pc? my god goodluck na lang as well as your boss wallet also.

    if youre going with wireless I recommend getting a top tier models from ubiquity it may cost around 9-15k depende pa sa kukunan mo, and additional 5k ata for the controller + licensing stuff. with the amount of computer you had, maybe get ready na lang with about 100-200k pesos spending.

    going wired will get it low though, probably less than 50k.
  • @polka

  • may i add nga din: risks in data security increases ten times if you plan on going wireless extensively. wired is still the way to go
  • masmadali ma intercept ang data ng wireless sa lan
  • yep, mas madali din i-jammed yung signal ng wifi, meron lang dyan nabibili sa ebay $5 wifi jammer, I do have one and it works, pinapaandar ko sya minsan sa mga hotspot areas like starbucks, ayun dami nag reklamo once I turned on the jammer.

    as I said earlier, mas reliable pa rin talaga ang wired connection vs radio based connection, kung medyo feasible sana yung Li-Fi today, that should be my most recommended implementation in terms of wireless connectivity.
  • for what purpose sir kung bakit po kailangan nung wifi jammer? tanong lang sir.curious lang po..hehe
  • @ polka

    Does it also jam 5 GHz bands?
  • @informix

    im just telling it for braggin rights, it also one way to take down your network easily with a $5 jammer.

    I can also take a existing old wifi router and install openwrt on it. then spam a bunch of SSID on your area with similar SSID name, it can make the wifi client confuse where to connect to.

    @majomgotan

    nope, the thing that I bough is 2.4ghz pero meron silang 5ghz version.

  • @polka

    how about MU-MIMO wifi sir?
  • off the topic.

    Sir ask ko lang sa inyo kung advisable ba i clone ang windows server, encase of corrupt os or error sa OS isasalpak na lang yung na clone na OS?

    anong software ang pwede gamitin sa cloning?

    Thanks sa sasagot.
