Ask Sir Tony - an Electronics/Electrical Q & A thread

  • Find a different 12v power adapter with higher ampere rating, then splice the connector from the original one. If you can't find any, you may need to use an ATX power supply.

    sir
do you have any idea where I can find a higher amp AC adapter, I have found 12v6a only, or maybe some electrician that can repair the adapter?
    tia po
  • Something like this could work: <click here for link>
  • @awakeruze

Sir thank you for the link, i will try contacting them maybe they can also convert
    thanks po
  • good day mga sir

12V DC is one of the easiest voltages to get, you can find a lot of power supplies being sold online which only differ in current rating (amperes). You can get a power supply that has the same rating as the dead adapter (6.5 amperes) or HIGHER. The 12V adapter of my Probox 4-bay enclosure died years ago and what I did was to just tap 12V from the computer's power supply so I wouldn't need to buy a new power adapter:

Regardless of what source of 12V DC you get, you need to salvage the power cable from the dead adapter and wire it correctly to the 12V supply. If you do this incorrectly, you might destroy your Orico enclosure (unless it has reverse polarity protection built into the enclosure's circuitry). The wiring diagram should be detailed on a sticker placed on the adapter itself.

    Sir Peorth
    thank you for the reply,
can you refer me to an electronics guy that can perform the work you mentioned?
    I am in QC
  • I don't know anyone I can recommend personally since I do my own DIY electrical work. You just need someone with some experience in electronics, and if you buy a power supply unit like what awakeruze posted earlier (with binding posts for wires) you won't even need to do soldering, just plugging in the correct wires.

If you can take a picture of the power adapter's sticker with the wiring diagram and the appearance of the connector that plugs into the Orico external HDD I can assess how difficult or easy the job is. If it's simple you can even do the job yourself, as long as you have a continuity tester. That's just a fancy way of saying something to test if a circuit is complete, which can just be a battery, wires, and a light bulb or LED light.
  • Hello mga sir.

Tanong lang, nagpakabit po kami ng mga ilaw sa ceiling sa bahay (led lights: recessed downlight, bulbs, etc) tapos napansin namin na kahit naka-off yung light switch ng eemit ng dim light yung mga ilaw (parang glow in the dark) pero noong triny namin na i-off yung switch sa fuse box, hindi na nag-eemit ng light yung mga ilaw (bale completely off na talaga). Is this normal?
  • Maraming dahilan kung bakit may glow ang LED lights, pwede mo basahin to:

Why Do My LED Lights Glow when Switched Off?

How To Stop LED Lights from Glowing When Off?

Pag naka on sya, kadalasan nawawala kuryente sa ibang outlet like namamatay efan or mamatay ilaw.

  • Sir Peorth,

Note na ang UPS ay posible maging dahilan ng problem sa other appliances or devices dahil pwede siya gumawa ng tinatawag na harmonic distortion sa AC power line, at least for transformer-based UPSes.

Backlight bleeding ba? Most likely habang linilipat yung LCD TV napwersa at nadistort yung display. Dahil dun nagle-leak ang light from the backlight. May konting suggestions sa ganyan, yung iba linuluwagan ng konti ang screws sa likod ng display (in case masyado pala mahigpit at nadi-distort ang display) or even disassembly at paglagay ng electrical tape sa edges. For example, eto recommendation from website:

How To Fix Backlight Bleed On A Monitor or TV
    <click here for link>

Before starting, it goes without saying that the TV should be turned off first and allowed a few minutes to cool off if necessary. Now, here is what you should do:

Slightly loosen the screws on the back of the display. Sometimes, clouding and/or flashlighting occur as a result of the panel warping due to the screws being too tight. Turning each screw half-way counter-clockwise should do the trick.
    Twist the frame slightly.
Turn the TV on and check if the backlight bleed is gone. If it isn’t, proceed to the following step.
Take the microfiber cloth and gently rub the areas where the bleed appears in a circular pattern. Apply only so much pressure that you can see the reflections in the screen warp slightly.

If you’ve done all of the above and the bleed still persists, try giving the display a day to settle. If, after that time, the backlight bleeding is still there, try repeating step number four, and it should go away eventually.
  • Maraming salamat sir Peorth!
  • Sir peorth follow up question po.

Then i-turn on one at a time at observe.

    https://youtu.be/H6QErjfIi-g

So ginawa ko tumawag na ako sa hotline ng meralco and kudos to them ang bilis umaksyon! After 3 hrs dumating sub con nila and nung iniliwan palang nila yung linya papunta sa bahay namin rh may napansin na silang mali. Hehehe

Maraming salamat sir Peorth mabuhay kayo!

  • ^Glad to hear naayos na yung problem.

Also, many years ago, yung katabi naming bahay nagkaroon ng electrical fire at nasunog ang buong bahay, halos walang gamit na nasalba.
Pure sine wave at nagustuhan namin form factor.

Question: Pwede bang gumamit ng power strip/extension cord with the said UPS para dun nalang namin isaksak yung ibang devices na hindi kakasya sa main outlets?

-- edited by Decidueye on Sep 15 2020, 02:34 AM
  • Yes, pwede gumamit ng extension cord from the UPS without issues. Try to plug as many adaptors/devices sa sockets ng UPS, then yung remaining adaptors plug sa extension cord na naka plug sa one socket ng UPS. Yung idea lang is to distribute the load among the sockets. Even if hindi necessary dahil hindi ganun kalaki ang power draw ng devices it's still good practice electrical-wise to distribute loads among current-carrying components ng electrical circuit.
  • ^Thanks for the fast reply as always sir
  • Good day. Planning to buy yung omni na may individual switches (2500w,10A). Hindi ko pagsasabayin gamitin yung appliance. Thanks.
  • ^Check mo wattage ng microwave and oven. Kung hindi mo plano pagsabayin yung dalawa then kung ang wattage ng oven and microwave ay < 2,500 watts then pwede mo gamitin yung extension cord. Pero kung very near yung wattage nung microwave and/or oven sa 2,500W (for example 2,400W) better to use an extension cord na may higher power rating (watts) para may safety margin.
  • Hi everyone, Good day! Can someone refer any tech that can repair a PSU? Thanks in advance.
  • Ok this is embarrassing. Nakabili kami ng APC BR1600SI nung 9.9 Lazada sale for 20k php.

Wala bang C14 male to US 2 pin female na standard? Hindi nga namin mapower on ito using the provided power cables lol
