Ask Sir Tony - an Electronics/Electrical Q & A thread

  • Finally got all of the necessary materials to complete the job. Just ran against a particular issue: There appears to be no suitable mount location for the busbar anywhere inside the panel board.

Is it manageable to mount the busbar next to the panel board instead of inside the panel board? Bale exposed ang busbar and hindi nakamount anywhere in the panel board. Here is the same panel board in question <click here for link> (kindly scroll through the images for pictures of the inside)

This is possibly the only issue that's stopping me from burrowing the ground rod. In between that and the thought of how many hammer strikes it will take to get it all the way down ~9ft without a proper hammer drill. Hahah!

Beyond gathering the materials perhaps the biggest hurdle is the location of the rod. I read that the conductor must be going straight to the busbar. But all locations in mind will require a 90-degree turn kasi the conduit keeping the wire will be affixed to the ceiling. Di ko pwede iwanan sa sahig lang on the way to the busbar kasi hallway po ito.

    And...

I have another concern regarding the water heater at home. The setup is basically like this: From the outlet in the bathroom where the water heater is plugged into, the wire travels to a solo circuit breaker in the kitchen and then at the end of the circuit breaker there's a plug. The plug is attached to a solo socket in the kitchen made especially for the water heater. The problem is when I tried to replace the outlet I noticed the previously copper-looking wire is now charred-like. Insulation is still present, but the copper now looks black. To my knowledge hindi naaabot ng patak ng tubig itong area. I am under the impression na ito ay sunog. Ano po kaya ang nangyari dito? Does the water heater need a conductor larger than #12? Though even if it were the case most outlet receptacles can't take more than #12 so the only other option is to hardwire the water heater somehow.

Similarly, I found out that the outlets in my bedroom is wired to a 30amp circuit breaker. I read that for 30amp rated breakers there needs to be a #10 conductor at minimum. Pero there's nothing plugged in my bedroom that warrants a 30amp breaker, I assume it's only connected to a 30 amp because the room next to me used to have a 1HP window type air conditioner and both rooms share the same circuit breaker. So what possibly happened is when they decided to install the AC there they quickly transferred all the wires previously connected to a 20amp circuit breaker to a 30 amp to accommodate the AC. The electrician whom installed my 'grounded' outlet didn't have any qualms tapping to the same 30 amp circuit breaker and insisted upon it for the reason that "dito kasi nakakabit ang kwarto mo". I was just under the impression that 20 amps (#12 gauge) is for outlets and 15 amps (#14 gauge) is for lights.

My thinking is I have no appliances that will ever utilize 30 amps so my #12 wire shouldn't be in danger, but am I missing something?

  • hindi ko po ma turn on ung cpu ko using the power button of the cpu case. shinorted ko lang po using screw driver ung sa motherboard and nag on. pero pag gnamit ko ung powerbutton ng case hindi po nagana. need ko na po ba magpalit ng board?

    salamat sa sasagot
  • @glennitsky
Sounds more like the power button (or its wires) is the problem.
  • Salamat sasagot.

anong okay na surge protector/extension cord with USB PORT 3A?

    Mahal kasi ng Lasco.
  • Is it manageable to mount the busbar next to the panel board instead of inside the panel board?

That’s fine. It would violate code in the US, but it’s fine here and better than the alternative of no grounding. A reason why busbars are inside a panel board is so that it’s safely out of the way. If you can’t find a terminal lug instead that will fit inside your panel board you can proceed with bolting the busbar next to the panel board and just run a conductor to the panel board so it’s also grounded.

  • @christophergorge

Check if there's a "Clear CMOS" jumper on the board (some still do).
I've seen a hack somewhere on the web, where 2-3 AA batteries in series were connected to the motherboard to get around the issue.

  • Hello po, just rented a new apartment in a building building around 1950s siguro. Gusto ko lamg po malaman if there's anything i need to worry about regarding yung kuryente dito. Beneco ang provider here in Baguio so I'm unsure sa lines. And is there anything i can do to modernize the setup here? Thanks po
  • Hey good evening.

Hingi lang sana ako ng tulong regarding sa ground/slight electric shock na nafifeel ko everytime I touch the IO Shield and PSU screws ng unit ko. I don't know much about troubleshooting and hesitant talaga ako mag tanggal ng mga components.

3 weeks old palang yung unit ko. And i'm not sure if the problem is from my outlet na walang ground wire or the unit itself. Nafifeel ko lang yung slight shock while i'm touching the wall behind the cpu, since wood yung floor ko and only when the unit is turned off and still plugged. nawawala yung slight shock kapag naka on yung unit. I've also experienced twice na hindi nag show ng display, no keyboard yung unit ko pagka boot. ayaw din gumana nung reset and long press ng power button. this happened while the unit was left overnight nang naka off pero hindi ko na off yung power strip or unplug. Is it possible na related ito dun sa ground issues ko?

    Maraming salamat po.

step down transformer ang kailangan mong gamitin dyan paps.
I'm planning to have a budget PA system installed sa aming provincial office. I bought 8 cone speakers with 100w drivers. Yung isang napagtanungan ko said na may modification pa daw na need gawin sa driver para daw di masusunog ang voice coil when used as a PA speaker? I believe the mod is to attach a self-recovery fuse onto the speaker to ensure that it doesn't burn out during use at high power.

Can anybody tell me more about this and how it is done?
So paano ko po matransfer yung mga files from redmi1s to my thumbdrive?
Pede po ba yung OTG hub?
If yes anong klase ng OTG hub kaya dapat kung gamitin?
    Any other alternative?
  • If that phone has OTG capability, you can connect a mouse and the thumbdrive to the phone via an OTG hub. It's best to bring them to the store so you can test before buying.

Will gonna test my mother's Redmi 1s for OTG setting... If it works on mine then yours might... Better find an OTG USB Hub afterwards

Since GSMA*ena says that it have OTG..
so far the issue on my case is pulverized inner power button cover so I had to crudely done a fix that even the back case's power button cover's bump seems flattened

EDIT: OTG works on my Redmi 1S and tested using a sandisk usb-C drive and a gaming mouse... You should try to test on your side now

Thanks for testing and sa mga suggestions and feedback. Will buy OTG hub and try.

  • @junt

I'm not an electrician, but generally the aircon requires its own breaker. You may even need to upgrade (i.e. increase the ampere rating) the "main fuse box" (aren't they all supposed to be circuit breakers these days?) in order to accommodate the increased load.
  • Help. Nasira kontador namin .need palitan .
  • ^ Get a real electrician for stuff like that.
  • Question po mga sir. Meron akong mining rig na ang power draw nya sa outlet is around 580-590w. 24/7 yan running for the past 3 months walang problema or any fluctuations sa kuryente namin. Naka plug yan mag isa sa Stavol 1200va avr then diretso outlet.

Meron kaming 2 AC, isang 1hp inverter (may sariling breaker) and isang .8hp non inverter (may sariling breaker din), 8cu/ft inverter ref, desktop pc, laptop. and the usual gamit sa bahat pero none of those running 24/7 except dun sa ref and mining rig.

    Salamat in advance mga boss.
8awg wire from poste and after ng meter, pasok ba sa 9kw?
  • Question ko lang about grounding.

Pero minsan lang sya, like once a week.

Di naman nangyayari to sa old house namin since pentium 2 days NEVER nangyari to, nagpapalit ako ram or gpu maski naka saksak ung pc wala naman ground.

  • ^if u mean higher capacity, like increasing AH (amphrs) but same Voltage. Yes palit battery lang. mangyayari lang dyan is longer charging hrs at syempre longer time din ng batts bago ma-lobat. not sure about sa auto shutdown...and for what? just as long as same V ang batts at ups mo regardless of higher or lower capacity yan it will function normally.
  • ^ higher capacity batt ay mas matagal dapat naka ON gamit yung battery, disregard ang total AH ng battery if enabled pa din ang timer, kaya yung iba ginagawan ng paraan para ma disable yung timer/autoshutdown.
