Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Ito yung SMART info ng dirve after ma remove then mount yung volume.

  • any recommendation for NAS? 30k budget... will use for file storage and streaming 1-2 devices, will use plex (currently using raspberry pi w/o transcoding), torrent client, need to access remotely sana din

    Thanks
  • is that you 30k budget including the drives or just the NAS alone?

if with drives you can probably just buy 2 4tb wd red and a 2bay NAS that supports the feature that you want, synology have that so have a pick there.

if without drives, for 30k you have plenty of choice, you can go either 4 bay or 6 bay depending on the features you want, you can go all for a 4bay nas with a pack of features (eg, a celeron based nas with 8gb of ram and a dedicated transcoder chipset for your plex, all NAS with synology supports plex with transcoding, though it will help a lot on the hardware if it has a dedicated transcoding chipset).

    @xoliver

If the HDD drives are not included in the 30K budget, the Synology DS918+ which comes with hardware accelerated transcoding, is a relatively high-end option to consider.

30K inclusive of the HDD, I would recommend getting one 4TB WD Red drive and either the DS418 or the DS418Play just to get started. Both units have hardware video transcoders as well. I think 4-bay NAS appliances will give you more room to add more drives later on as needed for more storage or redundancy and when your budget permits.

In my experience, Synology DSM is easy to setup for remote access if you opt to use their QuickConnect service. Otherwise, I you prefer something more secure, external access can be done by setting up a DDNS with a signed SSL certificate and port forwarding. VPN is another option. It's worth noting that only the DS918+ and DS418Play support AES-NI Hardware Encryption.

BTW, make sure you always have a solid backup strategy to protect your data.

    Thanks :)

    Edit:

Mas mura kasi siya and pati yung NAS, naka try na ako sa Amazon via ShippingCart (SC) for small items nga lang and not sensitive items like HDD which prone to damage dahil sa mishandling ng package.

Can be anything between a Raspberry Pi to a full blown Xeon rig.

FYI
  • power consumption wise, well, theyre basically the same. assuming you dont cheapout on your PSU so get at least a 80+ gold certified psu.

for motherboard and processor choice, with my recent build ng NAS para sa use ng isang nag pa build na friend ko, I opt in with a very basic DTX motherboard (no oveclocking or any kind of gimmicks that is not necessary for a NAS) and a celeron dualcore G4400, for heatsink, we just use a cheap 95w tdp tower based heatsink and removed the fans, since the processor is just idling anyway and it has more than enough airflow with Node 304 case, we tested it that it never goes above 60c specially this dry season here in Philippines.

Total power consumption: with 4 drives spinning around 30-40watts and idles around 9-12watts, the OS (OMV) is installed on a cheap m.2 sata ssd. compared that to a 6bay synology nas that also idles the same power consumption.

di bale pinagkaiba lang nila is the minimalistic design ng prebuilt NAS and ready to use na. of course you can save a lot of buck if you DIY it.
  • @MrBungle

I helped a friend rma his seagate and naharang din ng omb.

napapunta pa siya omb costing more than the permit itself.

HDD Cage: <click here for link>
    HBA: <click here for link>
SATA Power Cable: <click here for link>

    USE CASE: Plex Media Server
    OS: OpenMediaVault
    DISK CONFIG: JBOD
    POOLING: MergerFS
    PARITY: SnapRAID
    MEDIA SERVER: Docker Plex

Na-set ko ang mga unused disks to spin down para tipid sa kuryente at temps habang nanonood.
  • @MrBungle

Thanks for the info regarding DOA HDDs from Amazon and the OMB permit for RMA, definitely kailangan ma consider ko ito sa pagbili

    @polka

Kung same lang siya, i might consider buillding a DIY NAS na lang hehe

    @gabotron

How much na gastos mo sa set up mo without the HDD and case?
  • @xoliver,

    Item: 5-in-1 HDD Cage
    Quantity: 2
    Unit Price: P889
    Total: P1,778
    Promo: LZD B-day Sale

Item: Marvell 88SE9215 4-Port SATA Expansion Card
    Quantity: 2
    Unit Price: P1,169
    Total: P2,338
    Promo: LZD B-day Sale

    Item: 5-in-1 SATA Power Cable
    Quantity: 2
    Unit Price: P199
    Total: P398
    Promo: LZD B-day Sale

    Item: SATA Cable (Right Angle)
    Quantity: 10
    Unit Price: P335
    Total: P335
    Promo: LZD B-day Sale

Item: IDCooling SF12025 High Static Pressure Fan, 120mm, 84.5 CFM
    Quantity: 2
    Unit Price: P630
    Total: P1,260

    Grand Total: P6,109

    ----------------------------

So, 18 disks max.

Ang mobo ko naman, may 8 SATA ports. Tapos may additional 8 SATA ports from the Marvell 88SE9215 expansion cards. Sakto, may isa pa akong 2-port Asmedia ASM 106x SATA expansion card na di ginagamit.

This year, 10 disks + 1 boot SSD pa lang ang total ko. Dalawang disks per year ang balak ko. So, 4 years pa bago mapuno itong ginastusan ko ngayon.

    Ang pinaglumaan kong specs:

    CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K (Passmark: 7633)
    MOBO: Asrock Z87 Extreme4
    RAM: 4 x 4GB G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3-2133 non-ECC
SSD: 120GB Sandisk Extreme II SATA
    PSU: Enermax Revo85+ 850W
  • Item: Marvell 88SE9215 4-Port SATA Expansion Card
    Quantity: 2
    Unit Price: P1,169
    Total: P2,338
    Promo: LZD B-day Sale

you can probably save your self and buy a SAS card and SAS to 4port SATA cable. its probably cheaper including the cables, marami yan sa shopee, they are based on LSI, just buyt the preflahsed IT mode LSI cards, or just buy the IR ones and flash it with IT mode firmware.

seriously medyo natatawa ako sa mga ganyang mga storage controller na binebenta sa shopee and lazada, you can just buy a cheap LSI IT Mode card and 2-4 sas to sata cable, your good to go, its probably much more stable that your standard Marvell/Asmedia chipset which sometimes much more expensive than a LSI card.

    so you can buy this

    and 2 set of this

  • Thanks sir. Yan ang gamitin ko after 4 years, pag bumuo ulit ako ng DIY NAS.
  • Hi, trying to huild DIY NAS, may mabilhan ba ng Supermicro X8DT6-F Rev 2.00 Dual Xeon Socket LGA1366 dito sa pinas?
  • ^ none

to be honest, 1366 is underwhelming generation from intel. infact mas popular pa yung 775 back then yung linabas yan, and everything jumped to 1155 which are 2nd-3rd generation. I can still remember back then na mas ok pa yung performance/price ratio ng Core2 series kesa sa Core i series.
  • @polka

Processor: INTEL PENTIUM GOLD G5400 3.70 GHZ (Php 4k)
Motherboard: GIGABYTE B360N AORUS GAMING WIFI (Php 6.4k)
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB Single DDR4 2400Mhz (php 2.7k)
    HDD: 2x WD Red 4TB (PHP 12.9K)
Case: Fractal Design Node 304 (PHP 5k)
Power Supply: SEASONIC ECO PLUS 500W 80 PLUS BRONZE (PHP 2.3k)

    running total = PHP 33k+

ano recommended speed for RAM? any alternative sa GA-H1170N? enough na po ba yung PSU for future expansion ng 4 HDDs? Ok ba yung build for Xpenology?

    Thanks po :)

for mobo, maybe downgrade that to a cheaper one, get a DTX board instead since node 304 naman yung gagamitin mo dont worry about sata ports meron ang mobo, instead, yung savings mo na makukuha mo kuha ka ng SAS controller (check the links I posted above) and a SAS to SATA cable. apparently DTX boards are much cheaper than ITX boards, infact you can save upto 1k pesos on a DTX board. If you want a specific model then go with ECS H310CH5-M2 available yan sa pc-express.

for RAM, well get the cheaper one, no point using faster memory on a NAS anyway or anything that is flashy like having a heatsink or rgb, just get the plain looking ones.

for PSU, get a platinum or at least gold as much as possible, mahal kuryente sa pilipinas, mabilis mo mababawi yung additional gastos mo dyan.

for additions, if you follow my suggestion add also a dual port intel gigabit nic, but this is optional or you can plan to buy one in the future.
  • @polka

thanks for the mobo recommendation. for RAM ok na po ito? 8gb ddr3 1600mhz (2.2k) ? sa PSU ito na lang kunin ko: Seasonic S12G, 550watts PSU, 80 +gold. Saka ano mo better na dual intel NIC (model/version) na marecommend niyo?

    Salamat po muli

mukhang di na available yung link ng sas to sata cable .. pwede ba yung mini sas sff-8724 so sata hi speed data cable ? o kailanan yung sff-8087?
as for the card nakakita ako ng mas mura din sa shopee for php956 for the IT variant, so pagkakaintindi ko... with 4 ports sa card i can support up to 16 drives with it?

    TIA
  • ^sorry wrong model yung na post ko, im talking about LSI 9211 not the 9212 one.

well if you plan to buy that one, that thing support sata and sas drives (though sas drives needs a sata to sas adapter to work) and the interface there is just a normal sata port.

if you want to use mini sas port, go get this one instead <click here for link>
  • I just stick to sata so kinuha ko nlng ung lsi 9212. I chose the IT variant but how do i check? Nakuha ko na sya kahapon. Nadetect naman ung hdd ko. Di ko lng nasubukan sa lahat ng ports (just a quick test) pero may separate led sya sa card kung anong hdd na access. Nakita naman sa windows and linux (gparted cd).

I tried ctrl c to enter the config utility pero tumutuloy lang tpos ung nasa screen SAS2008-IR yung nakalagay na product identifier.

UPDATE: I confirmed thru sas2flash utilty na IR mode ung firmware. Luma pa (v6 lang). At least mas mura sya nabili heheh

Ni flash ko na lang to IT mode and v20 using this as reference

get a NAS with minimum of 2bays then 1 set of HDD (both same capacity) and set it to mirroring. total damage mo dyan with NAS and 2 pcs of 2tb HDD is around 26-30k.

    Synology NAS 2 Bay - 20-22k each
    Seagate NAS drive/WD RED - 3-4k each.

you can minimize this if you DIY it but since you were asking this kind of question, this is probably out of your league (you can save almost half the cost of the synology nas making it down to 18k or so with drives)

backplane na yan, its either replace the ports or it may require a board level repair on the backplane.
  • May thread pala about dito.

Yung 4x4TB drives halos lahat nagkakabad sector.

24 hour operation naman yung sayo no? Naka-plug sa UPS?

We have a similar setup sa isang office namin, DS414 nga lang, 4x4TB WD Red NAS. After 2 months na running na, dalawa sa drives nagka-bad sector. both pina-RMA, oks naman. Then after 1 year, yung isa naman, RMA ulit. Then this year, isa dun sa mga pina-RMA e nagka-bad sector kaya RMA ulit.

Right now, oks naman yung drives.
