Network Attached Storage (NAS)

  • Good day Sir.

Question about Synology Surveillance System meron na ba sa inyo gumamit ng hikvision or Dahua ip cams? any issue encountered?

    Thanks in advance.
  • Nabuo ko na yung pamalit sa synology. Bought a 2nd hand supermicro board. Installed unraid. Problem ko lang is di ko alam kung baket di ko ma turn-on using power switch. Kailangan ko pa sya i-on remotely. Aside from that, ok naman. Need na lang i-transfer mga files.
  • Ngayon ko lang nalaman, pwede pala iconnect yung built-in file manager app ng iPadOS sa Synology NAS via smb file share.
  • I plan to build a DIY NAS, pumalya na yung ds214play ko. Main purpose is file storage, file sharing, torrent and media transcoder (PLEX) but low wattage system. I plan to put 2 x 4TB hard drives (I have an existing 4TB). Raid is not a priority pero kung may budget for more drives baka mag RAID na din. I don't have a budget yet. Ok lang ba yung mga 3200g or baka may mas mababa na processors na ok. Ok din ba yung mga intel atom and raspberry pi?
    Thanks!
  • just get those Celeron J3xxxx series ITX boards instead. pwede din naman mag transcode ng video yun using quicksync which apparently what Synology uses on their x86 based NAS. As for AMD based APU/GPU, well walang hardware transcoding yan so you will be relying much on the raw CPU power but possible you can use the hardware transcoding for AMD if you install Windows instead of other NAS specific OS like xpenology, omv, truenas etc....
  • @polka
I plan to use xpenology or mag ubuntu ako
    Thanks, research ko yung celeron

i am using raspberry pi (started with rpi 3b+, now rpi 4b 2GB) maybe 3-4 years na. gamit ko sya as NAS, torrent, media player (Kodi) at netflix (also on Kodi) connected sa 9 years old plasma TV. before nasa Asus router lang ang NAS at torrent ko. sulit sya sa needs ko kasi low power consumption, easy to maintain at wala ng patayan. di rin need ng proper shutdown/restart, just disconnect the power and connect it back. ok naman ang transfer speed for me; @wifi-2.4GHz: 3-4MB/s peak, @wifi-5GHz: 10-11MB/s peak, @wired-gigabit: 25-28MB/s peak

since di mo priority ang RAID baka umubra na sa yo ang rpi. USB (2x3.0 at 2x2.0) lang kasi ang connection ng harddisk, so need mo pa ng enclosure for the harddisk.
  • no to raspberry pi as a NAS unless you want a head ache (USB timeout errors, SD cards suddenly get corrupted for no reason etc...)
im not saying it will not work, but its PIA to maintain.

maybe that will change once custom IO boards for raspberry compute module is now a thing. for now, the SBC... nope.

as i've said mine is running now 24/7 for 3-4 years already without any problem. actually once nainstall ko sya wala na akong gagawin, pag sinipag update minsan. swertihan lang ba yan or depende sa hardware and distro used? i am using sanddisk 16GB sd at raspbian.

i have also sa rpi 3b+ in my car (kodi+netflix) with OSMC before, madalas sya corrupted sd. no choice ako before kasi di lumalabas ang kodi sa vga port nya on raspbian kaya nag OSMC ako. then later i upgraded my headrest monitors to HDMI at nagswitch sa raspbian, di ko pa naexperience ulit yong corrupted sd.

  • Okay lang ba ihalo yung surveillance sa storage pool containing Ironwolf drives? Or better hiwalay na storage pool using surveillance drive? Parang sayang kasi yung drive bay kung hiwalay pa na storage pool, mababawasan yung capacity for expansion
  • well to be honest id just place it on a separate drive so the pool can spin down and save a lot of power and longevity of the drive in the process.
  • Gigabyte is releasing a Threadripper Pro WRX80 motherboard with 7 x 4.0 PCIE x16 slots .. this is going to be the perfect platform for an UNRAID/Proxmox build.

If you are in a family of 5 and all your kids are going to school, you can just buy monitors, GPUs, keyboards and mouse and run everything from this platform and it will not flinch.. you can probably run games all at the same time.

  • @alaeh Where did you buy your U-NAS NSC-810a? Thanks
  • ^ punta ka lang sa alibaba, marami mga ganyang case, probably just a rebranded case from generic design there.
  • @jang430, I got it from <click here for link> ... but looks like they wont have it in stock until Feb. See if you can try your luck ordering from taobao though <click here for link>..

Just a word of caution if you are planning on building up a server using this case is try not to overdo it or it is going to bring you grief... There is a reason why SOC mobos make the best pairing (Atom 3xxx, Xeon D-1500, Epyc 3000 SOC) for this case is because those chips are low TDP (25-55W) and this case is quite cramped already.

Otherwise, you will have fun building this thing up as a NAS or DAS or AIO 24/7 mini homelab.. that is after a few cuts and bruises (literal). :-)

  • There used to be a reseller of U-NAS cases in Alibaba but seems to have closed shop already.. The ones being sold by Shenzen Toploong may "look the same" at the front but it is really not the same case.. HINT: look at the back/rear side and compare that to a U-NAS case.

U-NAS may be a generic case but there is still a certain quality to it that is more top notch compared to other generic NAS boxes. Anyway, whoever supplies cases for U-NAS also seem to be the same supplier for Zappiti

    https://store.zappiti.com/en/home/3931-zappiti-nas-rip-4k-hdr.html
  • ^I got a actual hands on on a generic U-NAS and the actual U-NAS it self, the difference is, wala syang U-NAS logo, internally and built wise, theyre the same. nagtalo lang sila sa price, the generic only cost like 7k and that came with questionable quality 1u flex psu, maganda kasi sa alibaba pwede ka makipagtawaran. sa U-NAS naman mahal, as you can only buy it on US and EU and if you decide to get one anyway, talo ka na sa shipping at tax. im talking for this who actually ordering one here in PH.
  • I dont think there's currently a U-NAS or NSC-810 reseller in Alibaba at the moment although I was able to get my first one back in Dec 2019 from Shenzen Darta. All I'm saying is be careful what you buy because they are not all the same. I've posted some pics and actual links below.

Also, to order from U-NAS you need to send their sales team an email and they will send you a purchase link. Mine got delivered straight to my home by Fedex and only took a little over a week last Aug 2020. If you do not want to get taxed and since U-NAS will charge you for the shipping cost on top anyway, tell their sales to the list SRP of NAS at under $200 and add the remaining "cost" of the NAS to shipping cost in your official invoice.

Some sellers in Alibaba/Aliexpress already seem to be quite aware of our import taxes and already make outright adjustments to the item's SRP in their official invoice even without you requesting it especially if you are purchasing big ticket items (ie >$200USD).

  • Since naayos na ng PLDT na symmetrical yung upload sa download speed ng internet connection ko at nakapag-out-of-town ako after almost a year (out of necessity), nagagawa ko na mag stream ng music at video from my NAS at home to my smartphone at laptop. Okay din pala. No need for Spotify/Netflix. hehe
  • @alaeh

Question na din sir. san kayo naka purchase ng supermicro mobo? Baka may tips din kayo sa mga supplier. Currently eyeing xeon D's and Intel Pentiums for low power NAS.
  • @MrBungle,

been streaming via Plex/Plexamp to my phone as well. The music files I tend to download and sync to my phone since the files are small anyway and i dont like the music cutting off in while driving off in the middle of a dead spot

    @jecstrike,

still the the usual amazon, newegg, ebay.. although lately i've been looking at "open box" deals in provantage.
if it's flash sales on enterprise hardware you're after, the folks at servethehome are usually the first to post them.

  • If anyone is looking for a GUI-based file sync tool that is multithreaded, I can confirm that Choeazycopy works well out of the box. It's basically a wrapper tool on CLI based tool Robocopy. I managed to sync a 530GB folder between my Primary and Failover NAS in under 30 min. Details posted below.
Linus used it in his ridiculous 100Gbe file transfer demo using Liqid Honeybadger cards. :-)

  • @alaeh

Thanks ill check on it. Sana may ma spottan.
  • Ano kaya mas ok? Supermicro x10sdv-tln4f (xeon d-1541) or ryzen pro 4650g/4750g + asrock rack x570d4u-2l2t. Malaki kaya difference sa power consumption at idle ng 2.
  • Nahirapan na ako makahanap ng asrock j5040 or other gemini lake release na mobo. Baka may makatulong san makaka spot or any other similar product na pwede na as alternative.

  • Anyone here tried something like the Odroid HC2 or HC4 as a NAS? Are there any similar low-power solutions?
  • If anyone is looking to build out a NAS or a switch or both ... check out Supermicro X11SDV-4C-TP8F which is on sale now on *bay... it comes with everything you need already built into the motherboard like an HBA (12 x SATA), 10G ports (2x10Gbase-T and 2x10G SFP+), 1G ports (4x1Gbe) and it uses the more modern Skylake D processor... Just add RAM, disks and a case. Only thing that's somewhat a negative for me would be that TDP has increased a bit to 60W from the usual 45W.. Not a total dealbreaker but I would be quite nervous to put this on a U-NAS NSC-810A. This would definitely make good pairing with a Fractal Node 804 or the usual tower case.

This is posted on STH's deals section so I get alerted :-)

Patrick of STH has a good review of the board

  • my friend's getho setup:

Thincentre m92p tiny with 3470t processor - 16gbram - 120gb ssd - os: windows 10 (he upgraded the ram and replaced the drive with cheap ssd)

for storage, he uses the cheapo 5 bay orico hdd enclosure, nasa 3k daw bili nya.
filled with 5x 4tb drives, 2 of which is in mirror and other 3 is formatted individually.

most services running is mostly under linux subsystem (WSL) on windows with docker.

power consumption is around 12watts when the drives are sleeping/spindown and only the cpu part is active
transfer rate is around 112MB/sec which is easily fully saturated by the integrated Intel built in nic.

using USB for access to the drives is not advisable, but it works on certainly works sometimes on some workloads.
