Solid State Drives / SSD (Reviews, Feedback, etc) ~ No mentioning/promoting of sellers!

  • @sleepygeepy, yeah, after reading about the BX500, i decided to just pull the trigger on the Sandisk. Anyway, i'm using Sandisk rin naman on my rig

And I was able to have it installed na pala on my daughter's laptop. Tuwang tuwa si unica hija kasi it used to take her about 1.5 to 2 minutes before she can pull up Chrome. Now, it only takes her about 15 seconds (including logging in to Windows) and she already has a usable Windows environment
  • Is Patriot Burst 480gb worth buying?

buti nga dyan 2 mins lang, e.... sa akin dati up to 10mins on win 7 nung naka mech HDD pa ako.... naging 2+ mins (from turn on to desktop) nung gamit ko na Sandisk Ultra Plus 120gb.

  • Is Patriot Burst 480gb worth buying?

Ok narin siya for a budget SSD... uses 3D TLC NAND with Phison S11 controller but has no dedicated DRAM. Although yung controller has its own 32MB SRAM cache mainly for storing the flash translation layer, and is not used for buffering writes.

Kung gagamitin mo as a game drive or storage drive where you mostly read files (no heavy writing), hard to beat yung price at Php 2,800. Yung next option mo is the KLEVV Neo 480GB which is the same drive but using Silicon Motion controller (also DRAM-less).
  • wala ako masyado alam sa SSD, what are your suggested drives with DRAM?
  • @sleepygeepy

Gagamitin for OS and game drive.
  • @seanok
Gagamitin for OS and game drive.

I think ok naman for OS and game drive ang Patriot Burst 480GB. Just make sure lang na regularly "TRIM" mo yung drive and huwag mo punuin to the max (leave 10% free space).

At that price range wala narin significantly better option... Patriot Burst 480GB at KLEVV Neo 480GB lang ang only two options.

Kung gusto mo ng 500GB SSD with DRAM, yung nakikita ko na next in line are these drives below... kaya lang nasa Php 4K na yung price range:

    Php 4,090 = Crucial MX500 SATA
    Php 4,299 = Patriot Scorch 512GB NVMe
    Php 4,670 = T-Force Delta RGB 500GB SATA

Yung Crucial MX500 looks to be out of stock pero hindi ako sure. Ang Patriot Scorch looks to be a better deal since NVMe drive siya, but kailangan mo ng M.2 slot sa motherboard capable of PCIe 3.0 x4 speed.
Thank you.
  • @jZeNtRiCkS: cheapest ni p*h*b sa pricelist nila would be Patriot Burst 129gb at 950php... pero yung ibang brand na 120gb di naman nalalayo ang price...
  • padaan po.. dagdag lang ng konti, hehe! <click here for link>

  • Worth it ba 850 pro 500gb for 3.2k? Or go for 960 evo for 4k? Both are used pala. with 95+% health pa naman daw. Will be used as OS & game drive.

  • SSD with "95+%" health?!?
ano ba ginawa nila at bumaba ng ganyan..? tsk tsk
kahit 2nd hand, don't settle for anything lower than 100%

kung pwede na sa yo SATA (i.e. not M.2),
dagdagan mo na lang ng konti 4K mo,
brand new 500GB 860 Evo na
  • ^ if 100% sir worth it po ba?
  • from what i know, the health doesn't always mean degradation ng drive. but it does affect buyers in purchasing 2nd hand drives (non-volatile). mas mainam pa rin ung 100%. kasi if you do the math, 1% for every year taken from the drive, it will take you a very long time before writes stop & secure itself (nvme or ssd). may +12 months pa yan, assuming it hits 0% health, para malipat mo ung mga files na important to another driver, before it becomes in-operable. mas ma-concern tayo sa writes kung 2nd hand or physical defects siguro. so in short, by the time it hits 0, obsolete na ung drive, or nakapag-upgrade ka na into a new tech. just my 2 cents.

  • OCZ Agility II (2.5" SSD; almost a decade old)

    Vs.

Samsung 960 Evo (NvMe M.2 Drive; 2+ years)

  • Mga master, I just bought an XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB, and nagtataka ako kung bakit wala syang sariling NVME driver as opposed to other brands like Intel and Samsung. I already went sa website nila and yung toolbox and yung transfer tool lang yung meron dun. Is this the part where I should tell myself "you get what you pay for?" XD

I have no issue using the native/generic Microsoft NVME driver, though just wondering if the performance will improve further if it has a dedicated driver.

Just need an enlightenment mga master (Y)

P.S. wala nga talagang improvement felt if going by SATA SSD to NVME SSD as opposed to Any SSD from HDD. Anyway, gusto ko lang sya gamitin sa heavily modded sa Skyrim (just to shorten the loading time of the said mods).

    Thanks sa mga makakasagot.

  • @the_perfect - thanks for the info sir! :)

Eto po ba worth it for 2.3k? 100% health po.

  • ^Bnew or 2nd hand? If 2nd hand yan, add P300 more Patriot burst na lang ako. Kung ako lang naman. Maganda sa Western Digital is yung warranty.
  • Post deleted #12223148
  • ^second hand sir. I'm not really an expert pagdating sa ssd and sa mga technologies nito like dram cache, tlc & qlc. kaya more on trusted and known brands ako like wd, samsung etc... sa patriot naman may mga nakikita ako DOA daw pagkatest nila as in 0% health pagkabili ng bnew. same din dun sa team elite ssd.
  • ^Aray. Same here.

  • @RyuzakiL; don't know from other brands but for samsung, benchmarks lang magka-difference sa Win10.

P.S. wala nga talagang improvement felt if going by SATA SSD to NVME SSD as opposed to Any SSD from HDD. Anyway, gusto ko lang sya gamitin sa heavily modded sa Skyrim (just to increase the loading of the said mods).

OS Boot times & if you're into moving very large files (raw). or if you're a creator (photo, video, rendering, animation & the likes). yan ang advantage ng nvme m.2 drives in pcie link. same lang ang rated bandwidth per brand kapag nvme ssd & 2.5" ssd, capped yan theoretically @ 600MB/s. unless you go raid 0 siguro.

Cloning Bootable Windows: 2 Nvme M.2 drives, using Macrium Reflect Free

@TPC_GameGuard025: if 300 or less as stated ni jeff_3429, get a "sealed" brand new one. although, there are always lemons on stocks but very seldom yan. if the brand new unit will be locally bought, warranty is an advantage. instant replacement or worse scenario na ang pull out & rma. syempre, iba kung online & overseas ang purchase, medyo nakaka-kaba. asahan mo may mga restocking & re-shipment fees & the likes kapag overseas purchases kapag beyond the merchant's dictated warranty.

kung dramless, scheduled trim will suffice. non volatile storages, i guess, are mature nowadays. compared a decade ago. you can never go wrong except when it is lemon or handled inappropriately. hth.

May improvement parin when using a fast NVMe SSD, it depends on the usage. If you run applications with heavy writes like during 4K video editing, I'm sure magiging noticeable ang speed difference ng NVMe. Kung light lang ang usage like starting up Windows or loading up a game, baka hindi noticeable ang difference kasi maliit lang ang files na binabasa or very small number of I/O operations ang naka queue.

Yung modded Skyrim is notorious for slow loading times even on SSD.

One sureball way to speed up loading times sa game is gumamit ka ng RAM drive hehe.

  • @TPC_GameGuard025
Eto po ba worth it for 2.3k? 100% health po.

Ask the seller kung how many years na niya nagamit ang SSD and kung may official receipt / official distro sticker. Kung nagamit lang niya for 1 year or less then I think sulit na siya. That is assuming na wala ibang problema ang SSD at yung SSD galing sa official WD distro sa Pinas.

Ang warranty policy kasi ng WD Blue SSD is 3-5 years depending on the model. Pero may condition sila na if na exceed mo yung endurance rating ng drive (total bytes written) before the warranty period... then expired narin ang warranty. So even if 100% yung health status ng drive, kailangan mo din i-check how many bytes were written para malaman mo ano yung remaining warranty.

Very affordable ang mga SATA SSD ngayon, and I would recommend you buy a brand new one kung hindi naman super tight ang budget. Yung only incentive mo to buy a 2nd hand WD Blue SSD is kung may remaining warranty pa siya of 1-2 years or more.

I guess you can say na benefit din ng mga more expensive SSD brands tulad ng Samsung, Intel, Crucial, etc may sarili silang software utilities to monitor the health of the SSD. Mas reliable ang readings nila compared to using third party software tools.

Kung totoo na 0% health ang drive, dapat hindi ka na pwede mag write sa SSD and naka read-only mode nalang siya. Anyway kung yung SSD is 0% health out of the box, at kapag tinest mo hindi talaga gumagana... then have the shop replace the drive or swap to a different model :-)
  • the_prefect

Salamat master, yes talagang heavy use scenario lang talaga makikita yung dalang improvement ng NVME SSD. Anyway, hindi naman ako nagsisi sa binili ko, at least kasya na yung big games like FF XV and Quantum Break hehe. XD

    sleepygeepy

Salamat sa input Master. Yep, from now on hindi ko na isipin yung improvement, rather isipin ko na lang marami na akong games na malalagay as opposed to my 250gb EVO 850 hehe.

As for Skyrim, guess I just need to refer to those all in one mods, and maybe they've already optimized it. Hehe

Oks sana Ram disk kaso mahal pa yung 32gb kit @ 3200mhz/CL14. Last time I look nasa 18k pa :( tagal bumaba ng price ng Ram as opposed to SSD XD

    MrBungle

Thanks for the confirmation master, medyo na-trigger lang yung pagiging OC ko as I'm expecting that with new protocol (NVME), there should be some specialized driver for it. :)
  • Intel 660p NVMe 2TB for $200, yay or nay? :)

edit: gagawin kong Game Drive if ever, tapos mechanical HDD for Data.

-- edited by mokmoki on May 14 2019, 11:46 AM
  • @mokimoki

I use my 1TB 660p as an external NVMe SSD drive and after a brief moment of high transfer speeds, the speed drops to around 70~80 MB/s when the SLC cache runs out which sucks. Sequential reads and writes to QLC NAND are actually slower than HDDs. I know the price of the NVMe 660p is even cheaper than many SATA SSDs of equivalent capacities which is what makes it so tempting, remember, you get what you pay for.

I guess as a game drive, it might be fine though, judging from the AMZN reviews.
